The risks having Dental implants

Risks and complications

  1. The dangers of anaesthetics – as with undergoing any kind of surgery, the patient risks experiencing unexpected allergic reaction to the anaesthetic. This risk is relatively low, but should by all means be put into consideration.

  2. Infection – as with the risks of anaesthetics, there is also a danger of developing an infection, which is likely in any type of surgical procedure. However, the patient can take precautions to reduce the risk of infection, namely maintain a very high standard of oral hygiene, including using antiseptic mouthwash which is also thought to help avoid an infection. It is also crucial to fully complete the course of antibiotics prescribed by the doctor.

  3. The jawbone and the root replacement may not merge – the chance of the jawbone not accepting the implant is considered to be very low. However, if it does happen, the implant can become loose. In this case, the dentist will have to perform another procedure and take out the loose dental implant. In time, the bone will naturally heal and the doctor will be able to put another implant in the place of the lost tooth.
