Root Canal Treatment

The branch of dentistry that treats the pulp of the tooth is called endodontics. The pulp is a soft mass of tissue that contains blood vessels and nerves. It is located in the centre and the root canal of the tooth. If decay is left untreated for a long time, it can spread to deeper tissues of the tooth and cause infection in the pulp or even the root canal. Moreover, sometimes the pulp gets irritated by traumas, repeated restoration or other kinds of damage. In both cases, the only way to reduce inflammation and restore the health of the tooth is to remove the infected pulp from the centre of the tooth and the root and fill it with a special endodontic material. The second reason for a root canal is damage to the pulp that can't be fixed.

If the pulp is damaged, but the tooth is left untreated, an abscess may form in the gum, which might result in the need to remove the entire infected tooth. Moreover, the infection can spread further to the oral cavity and other bodily organs, such as heart and stomach.

Depending on the complexity of the case, the root canal cleaning process can be completed in a single visit or need more than one procedure. In most cases, root canal treatment should not be painful since it will be performed under a local anaesthetic.
